DeSales football team grinds out another winning season
New leaders emerged and its schedule was slightly different, but the end result looked similar to a year ago for the DeSales football program.
The Stallions lost four of their first six games in 2021 before putting together a five-game winning streak that ended with a tight loss in a Division III, Region 11 quarterfinal.
This fall, DeSales started out 2-3 but won five of its next six before falling 13-7 to second-seeded Uniontown Lake on Nov. 4 as a No. 7 seed in a Division II, Region 7 quarterfinal.
It was another 7-5 finish for the Stallions, who hope a season that coach Ryan Wiggins called a “grind” was a step toward further success a year from now.
“We won five of our last six going into that last game,” Wiggins said. “Our defense played really, really well. We got better as the year went on.
When you look at our last game, we moved the football quite a bit, but unfortunately we put it on the ground a couple times.
We played a very difficult schedule and lost a close one in the second round, a game we didn’t play well enough to win.”
The Stallions could have the pieces in place for a better finish next fall, when they will look to extend their current run of 12 consecutive seasons without a losing record.
The biggest loss on offense will be senior running back Gabe Caruso, who rushed for 854 yards and five touchdowns, added 119 receiving yards and was honorable mention all-district.
