What general precautions should I take to protect my online account?

To protect your account from fraudulent online activity, please note the following:

Hide your password and change it as often as possible
Changing passwords will always help protect your account, even if you may have accidentally revealed it to someone.
Make it harder to crack your password
Make a password at least 8 characters long when creating a password. Create at least one uppercase letter, number (0-9) and special character (such as #, $, etc.). This makes it very difficult to crack the password
Avoid using a cyber cafe to access internet banking accounts
Computers in cyber cafes can be full of viruses and Trojan horses that can intercept your personal information and send it to fraudsters. The easiest way to obtain information is through key registration software, which records all entered keys, which are then obtained for fraudulent use. Be careful when entering passwords on unknown computers.
Keep your computer safe
Some phishing e-mails or other spam may contain software that records information about your Internet activity (spyware) or opens “backdoors” that allow hackers to gain access to your computer (Trojan horses). Installing and updating antivirus software can help identify and disable malicious software, while using antispam software can prevent you from receiving phishing e-mail. It is also important, especially for broadband users, to install a firewall. This will help keep your computer’s information safe while blocking communication from unwanted sources. Make sure you are constantly updated and download the latest security patches for your browser. If no fixes are installed, visit the Web page in your browser, for example, Internet Explorer users should visit the Microsoft Web site.
Make sure the site you are visiting is secure
Before submitting your bank details or other sensitive information, you can perform a few checks to make sure that the site uses encryption to protect your personal information:
If the address bar is visible, the URL should start with “https: //” (for security “s”) instead of the usual “http: //”.
If you don’t see the address bar as our internet banking website, look for the lock icon in the browser status bar. You can check the encryption level expressed in bits by hovering the cursor over the icon.
Verify the SSL certificate
If in doubt, click the lock icon at the bottom of the secure page. A new window with SSL certificate information will open. Make sure there is no red cross next to the “Certificate Information” name. It should also be “Problems at: https://www.pnbbank.co.in
For more information, click on the other tabs in the certificate window. Following the steps above will help you protect yourself. Keep in mind, however, that fraudsters always try to be one step ahead. To always be protected:
Do not share your PIN or passwords with anyone
Don’t write it
Don’t use the same password for all your online accounts
Avoid opening or replying to spam emails, as this will confirm to the sender that he has reached the current address.
Never respond to emails asking for personal information

At PNB Bank, we do not request your personal information via e-mail. We also do not request you in any way, by phone, fax or in person. If one of our bank staff asks for your password, do not disclose it and report it to us immediately. If you do not know the amount you charged, report it in writing to PNB Bank. If you suspect that an e-mail claiming to be from PNB Bank is fraudulent, please report it to the Call Center.
